A Pandemic Broadcast From March 2020 (Not a Keto Video)
This is a 45-minute Facebook Live from March 12, 2020, early in the COVID-19 outbreak; I said we were "just at the very beginning of this." I recorded it while on vacation. There's no keto in it. I said at the end that the next broadcast would be about weight loss and a lot more fun.
In this recording
- [0:01] I opened with a disclaimer: I'm not a medical professional; think of me as a science teacher who read the paperwork, with a background in data analytics.
- [0:55] My view that the media was being conservative, not hyperbolic, about the outbreak.
- [2:35] to [12:05] My own back-of-envelope projections for infections, hospitalisations and deaths, worked out live, including for my high-school class (I said I was 37).
- [10:17] Why I was worried about my audience in particular: I said the group skewed older and heavier than me, and I listed lung health, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes as the risk factors I'd read about.
- [12:23] My read that it spread mostly through the air, so distancing mattered more than hand-washing, though wash your hands anyway.
- [20:35] What I'd keep at home: basic cough and fever medicine and lozenges.
- [28:37] "Flatten the curve": slowing spread so hospitals aren't overrun for everyone else, heart attacks and broken legs included.
- [31:09] Use the time to fix things you'd regret leaving unsaid, and make contingency plans for children and anyone who depends on you.
- [33:05] A political section on sick leave, the cost of testing and child care for health workers, ending with which candidate I preferred on those three issues.
- [45:28] A promise that the next one would be about weight loss.
Why the numbers aren't on this page
The middle of the broadcast is a string of projections I calculated on camera from figures I'd read that week. They were my estimates on one day, not findings, and they aren't from this site's evidence pages, so I'm not repeating them here. If the recording gets posted, it should carry its date up front.
What, if anything, belongs on a keto site
Two things. First, the opening disclaimer: not a medical professional, reading the research, telling you what I think it says. I said the same about my coaching in 2019 (live KPDK8043). Second, the risk factors I named are ones a lot of people in my group were working on. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or lung disease, the people to plan with are your own doctors, not a Facebook Live. See who should talk to a doctor.
